Triple Talaq Bill Passed in Rajya Sabha With 99 members voting in favour and 84 voting against

Triple Talaq Bill has been passed in the Rajya Sabha on July 30. Making instant triple talaq a criminal offence, the contentious bill was passed in Rajya Sabha after initial roadblock. The bill follows a SC verdict of 2017 declaring instant triple talaq as ‘unconstitutional’. Finally, Triple Talaq Bill Passed in Rajya Sabha With 99 members voting in favour and 84 voting against.

As per the document, The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, was tabled in the upper house for debate and passage by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who mentioned that though the practice had been banned in many Islamic countries, India had not done so despite being a secular nation. The Bill, which criminalises the practice of instant divorce among the Muslim community, has already been passed by the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi, “This is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq. The abolition of Triple Talaq will contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve in our society”. The PM asserted.

Union Home Minister, Amit Shah stated that, “Today is a great day for India’s democracy. I congratulate PM Narendra Modi for fulfilling his commitment and ensuring a law to ban Triple Talaq, which will free Muslim women from the curse of this regressive practice”. I thank all parties who supported this historic bill. He tweeted. While Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath stated in an interview to ANI News Agency, “The passing of the triple talaq bill, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a proud moment. This is not aimed any community, but is for the dignity of women.”

Also, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani on July 30 stated the passage of the triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha is a victory for millions of Muslim women and called it a “true testimony” to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’. Thus, The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 is a victory for millions of Muslim women, The Union minister Stated in a tweet.
