Beef traders in Goa called off their four-day-old strike on Tuesday as the the BJP-led coalition government assured them that the meat would be imported from Karnataka under police protection, a traders association chief said.
Addressing a press conference in the city, Quraishi Meat Traders Association of Goa President Manna Bepari said, ” We have been by the government that the red meat would be imported from Karnataka under police protection.
In light of assurance given to us by senior police officials, that our beef consignments would be given police protection, we are withdrawing the strike. Beef will be available in the state from Wednesday”.
The beef traders had gone on an indefinite strike from January 6 last alleging harassment from some NGOs who had allegedly ‘raided’ their beef consignments while they were coming from Karnataka.
