US women’s soccer league to stage 2020 Challenge Cup in summer

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) of the United States announced on Wednesday that the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup will mark the return to action for all nine clubs this summer.

The 25-game tournament, to be played in a pair of stadiums in Utah without fans between June 27 and July 26, will be the league’s first competition since the 2019 NWSL Championship which saw the North Carolina Courage defeat the Chicago Red Stars to become back-to-back NWSL champions, reports Xinhua news agency.

The 2020 season was supposed to begin in April, but the COVID-19 put the league on hold.

The format of the summer tournament will feature the league’s nine clubs each playing four games in the preliminary rounds to determine the seeding and standings.

The top eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals, when the tournament becomes a knockout competition. The championship match will be slated for July 26.

NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said that “this exciting month-long tournament will showcase our league’s talented players and provide our fans the type of world-class entertainment they’ve come to expect from the NWSL.”

America’s major men’s soccer league, MLS, has resumed limited training and also looks to restart the season in the summer.
