Mehbooba, Omar demand probe into J&K civilian’s killing

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah on Saturday demanded a probe into the killing of a civilian during a firing incident in Badgam district.

In a statement, Mehbooba expressed “deep shock and anguish” over the killing of Ishfaq Ahmad allegedly by an Army unit at Chattergam area on Friday.

She asked the Governor’s administration to strictly ensure that security agencies were made accountable for protecting civilians and avoiding collateral damage during operations. She demanded an inquiry into the incident and also sought compensation to the victim’s family.

Abdullah condemned the incident in a tweet: “Conflicting reports of the circumstances surrounding Ishfaq Ahmed’s shooting. It’s imperative that the administration establish the factual position to the satisfaction of the people, especially Ishfaq’s family. May Ishfaq find his place in Jannat (heaven).”

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami, a religious organisation, has also demanded probe into the killing, calling it a “cold blooded murder by the Army”.
