BJP’s 6 Rajya Sabha hopefuls

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday announced the names of the candidates for 11 seats in the Rajya Sabha. It also includes some low profile faces, which many people do not know at the national level.

Abhay Bhardwaj, Ramilaben Bara, Liusenba Maharaja, Buswajit Daimary, Bhubaneswar Kalita, and Rajendra Gehlot are among these. On Wednesday, when the BJP released the list of Rajya Sabha candidates, many people were taken aback.

Abhay Bhardwaj

Abhay Bhardwaj is a lawyer from Rajkot. He has been a lawyer for the Gujarat government from time to time in many big cases. Bhardwaj has been a lawyer for the state government in cases related to the famous Gulbarg society scandal, the murder of former BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali, and case of IAS officer Pradeep Sharma. A general secretary of the BJP Gujarat unit said that Bhardwaj has been associated with the party for long, so he was given a Rajya Sabha ticket.

Ramilaben Bara

Ramilaben Bara has also been given Rajya Sabha ticket from Gujarat by the party. She is the tribal face of the party in Gujarat and is also the state vice president. Former MLA Ramilaben is also the chairman of the tribal development department. In 2017, she lost had Assembly polls from Khedbrahma seat like in 2012.

Rajendra Gehlot

Rajendra Gehlot may not have any special identity at the national level but he is the state vice president of BJP in Rajasthan. He has been a minister in the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat government. Gehlot, a resident of Jodhpur, was jailed during the Emergency. He was an official of the organisational polls held in BJP recently.

Buswajit Daimary

The BJP has given Bodoland People”s Front, an ally of Assam, a Rajya Sabha seat in the state. From this seat, Buswajit Daimary has been made a candidate. Daimary is contesting the Rajya Sabha election for the third time. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2008.

Liesenba Maharaj

The BJP has given Liesenba Maharaj a Rajya Sabha ticket from the second seat in Assam. Liesenba is the great-grandson of Bodhchandra, the last king of Manipur. He has never been associated with any party but due to his association with the royal family, he has special influence in Manipur.

Bhubaneswar Kalita resigned from the Rajya Sabha while in the Congress in August 2019 and joined the BJP. Kalita was also the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha at the time of his resignation. Kalita resigned protesting the party”s stand on Article 370. As promised to him, now the BJP has made Kalita a Rajya Sabha candidate from Assam.

Bhubaneswar Kalita resigned from the Rajya Sabha while in the Congress in August 2019 and joined the BJP. Kalita was also the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha at the time of his resignation. Kalita resigned protesting the party”s stand on Article 370. As promised to him, now the BJP has made Kalita a Rajya Sabha candidate from Assam.
