Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam today wrote to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding that the State Govt acquire the legendary RK Studios which is going to be sold soon. Mr. Nirupam also demanded that the studio be converted into a film museum
While Sanjay Nirupam respected the Kapoor family’s decision to sell the iconic studio he stated in the letter that, “For the Kapoor family, this will surely be more of an emotional loss than a financial one. Over the past few decades, the people of Mumbai too have developed an emotional bond with the legendary film studio. Hence, we demand that the Govt. acquire this property at the market value stated by the Kapoor family and convert it into a film museum. This will serve the dual purpose of preserving an important part of our nation’s heritage while generating revenue for the Govt. as well”.
As Mr. Nirupam listed some of the greatest films of all times which were shot in RK Studios in the letter, he also demanded that the Govt. should preserve the tremendous historical and emotional value attached to the Studio. Mr. Nirupam also requested Devendra Fadnavis to look into the matter stating that, “the iconic film studio is an extremely important part of our country’s cinematic history as well as an icon of cultural integration”.
RK Studios, founded by the greatest showman of Hindi Cinema Late Shri. Raj Kapoor has been put up for sale by the Kapoor family since it is no longer practical or economical to keep the studio running. It was not economically viable to rebuild the studio after it was gutted down in a major fire in September last year.
