The White House said on Wednesday that the US will not lift sanctions on Turkish steel and aluminum products even if detained American pastor Andrew Brunson is released.<\/p>\n

In a press briefing, White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders said, \u201cThe tariffs that are in place on steel would not be removed with the release of Pastor Brunson. The tariffs are specific to national security,\u201d Xinhua reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president\u2019s been clear about the steel and aluminum industries, steel, particularly, in this case; that those are industries that must be protected. We must have the ability to reach certain levels of manufacturing those products here in the United States for the purposes of national security,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Turkey announced earlier to slap tariffs on American goods.<\/p>\n

Sanders responded that \u201cthe tariffs from Turkey are certainly regrettable and a step in the wrong direction,\u201d adding \u201ccertainly we don\u2019t support Turkey\u2019s decision to retaliate against us protecting our national security interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tariffs that the United States placed on Turkey were out of national security interests, theirs are out of retaliation,\u201d she noted, refusing to reveal U.S. further actions to respond to Ankara\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Brunson\u2019s case, Sanders said, \u201cWe feel that Turkey and specifically President Erdogan have treated Pastor Brunson \u2026 very unfairly, very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that we won\u2019t forget in the administration,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

As for the Turkish economy and its currency, Sanders said, \u201cWe\u2019re monitoring the situation with respect to the Turkish economy and the decline of the lira, but Turkey\u2019s economic problems, those are part of a long-term trend, something of its own making and not the result of any actions the United States has taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s appeal to boycott U.S. electronic products on Tuesday, Erdogan signed a decree to raise tariffs on some U.S. imports including cars, alcohol and tobacco, state-run Anadolu agency quoted Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan as saying on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump tweeted last week that he had authorized to double the tariffs on steel and aluminum products from Turkey to 50 percent and 20 percent respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
