Is it right to exclude men or women from certain professions because of their gender?
As an gender egalitarian, I really can’t think of a profession that requires excluding people based on gender. I think people should be given all the same rights. If, say, a man is really good at looking after small children, or a woman wants to be a lumberjack, I can’t see any reason to stop them from fulfilling their dreams and bringing their passion and skills to the table. If they are incapable of doing the job for whatever reason, just as many members of the opposite gender are, then they should not get the job, But they should be given the chance to apply and be considered.
I don’t believe there will ever be and exact 50/50 split between genders in kindergarten teachers or lumberjacks simply because of innate gender differences, but we should let natural desire and ability determine it, not regressive, sexist, generalised rules.
