Smarter Village

The word ‘Smart village‘ is a relatively new concept in India, even though, it has existed since decades in the western world. However, India has come a long way and the time is ripe for developing smart villages across the country.

Moreover, the Government of India finally appears to be serious about this issue and has geared up to come up with smart cities and smart villages across the country. Let’s have a look at what goes into building a smart village.

Connectivity

This is the very first thing that needs to be taken care off before anyone can even think of developing a smart village. Connectivity is a huge problem across rural India be it the roads or digital connectivity in terms of broadband penetration. Therefore, this should be the very first step that needs to be taken in order to truly start the process of developing a smart village.

The following are the essentials when it comes to connectivity:

  • Develop proper roads and transportation across villages
  • Increase broadband penetration across rural India
  • Strengthening mobile connectivity to connect the remotest parts of the country

Sanitation and Clean Drinking Water

Sanitation and clean drinking water are one of the prerequisites for a community to thrive and increase the overall living standards of the residents. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to come up with a solid plan to ensure that residents have proper sanitation and access to clean drinking water. Sanitation and access to clean drinking water is anyway a huge problem across many villages, where sometimes people have to travel huge distances in order to get enough water to make it through the day.

The following are the essentials when it comes to sanitation and clean drinking water:

  • Develop a centralized system for ensuring proper sanitation and for providing safe and clean drinking water
  • Educating people on the lines of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan to prevent open defaecation and throwing trash in the open.
  • Focus on rain water harvesting for areas which lack rainfall and are often faced with droughts

Education and Healthcare

Education and healthcare are areas which needs an increased amount of focus. Currently, there is a dearth of schools and colleges in rural India and students needs to travel huge distances to make it to the nearest institution. Moreover, an extremely huge number of students drop out of schools due to lack of proper facilities. This is another area which needs to be checked.

When it comes to healthcare facilities, villages lack hospitals, and even if there is one, it lacks the facilities required to tackle any major illnesses. The government needs to heavily invest in developing the requisite infrastructure and increase the number of emergency medical trainers to deal with any contingencies that may arise from time to time.

Moreover, both the education and healthcare facilities need to be centrally connected to keep a track on the progress being made and whether the services intended for the people are actually being delivered optimally or not, and if not, plug in any potential gaps.

Developing a smart village isn’t a distant dream; however, it requires vision and a strong resolve. Now whether that vision gets delivered or not is something that remains to be seen.
