Budapest Honved wins Hungarian Football Cup

Budapest Honved FC have won the prestigious Hungarian Cup for the eighth time, and the first time in 11 years, after defeating Mezokovesd 2-1 in the summit clash.

The Hungarian Cup is the nation”s second biggest football tournament after the National Championship NB1. Honved previously won the trophy in 1926, 1964, 1985, 1989, 1996, 2007 and 2009, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Wednesday, Honved took the lead in the 33rd minute, but it lasted only four minutes, as Mezokovesd equalised in the 37th minute. Honved regained the lead in the 56th minute, and managed to hold off their opponents until the end of the game.

The game was the first major football event played in front of spectators since the outbreak of COVID-19. Some 9,600 people watched the game in the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

In order to respect the social distancing rules due to the COVID-19 outbreak, only every fourth seat was used while players could only play after having passed a COVID-19 test.
